Hospital or home?
Maternity stays in New Jersey are short, often one to two nights for a routine delivery. If you hear the news the same day and can order in the morning, a hospital delivery works. Otherwise, send to the home two or three days later, when the parents are settled and can actually enjoy the flowers. Most families prefer the home delivery anyway; there is more room and no need to carry a vase out to the car.
What maternity units allow
General maternity and postpartum units at hospitals like Cooper in Camden, Jersey City Medical Center, St. Joseph's in Paterson and Hoboken University Hospital accept flowers. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) do not. If the baby is in the NICU, send flowers to the home and a card to the hospital.
Use the mother's full name as the patient name, the unit ("maternity" or "postpartum"), and the hospital's street address. The information desk brings the arrangement to the room.
What to send
Soft pastels are traditional but not required; bright mixed bouquets are just as welcome. Choose low-fragrance flowers for the hospital and a compact container. Pair the flowers with something useful: a meal delivery gift card, a plush toy, or a balloon. Many parents love a small flowering plant that becomes a keepsake.
