How to send flowers to a patient at Saint Michael's
- Confirm the patient is admitted and which unit they are on. Call the main number, 973-877-5000, and ask; the unit determines whether flowers are allowed.
- Order online with the hospital's street address. Use 111 Central Avenue, Newark, NJ 07102, not a P.O. box.
- Add the patient's full legal name and the unit or room. Put it in the recipient name and delivery-instructions fields so the information desk can route it.
- Order in the morning. Patients are often discharged before noon; an early same-day order has the best chance of arriving in time.
- Include your phone number. The florist calls you if the patient has moved or been discharged, so the delivery can be redirected.

About Saint Michael's
Saint Michael's Medical Center is a 358-bed teaching hospital in Newark's downtown business and university district, part of Prime Healthcare and a teaching affiliate of New York Medical College. It was the first hospital in New Jersey to perform open-heart surgery, and its main programs today are its heart and vascular, cancer, breast and liver centers.
The intensive care unit is on the 6th floor and the inpatient behavioral health unit is on the 8th. The hospital's list of services does not include a maternity unit, so confirm with the hospital before sending new-baby flowers here.
Saint Michael's flower policy
Saint Michael's visiting page says no floral arrangements or stuffed toys are permitted at the bedside in the critical care units. Its patient guide adds that florists deliver directly to patient rooms on other floors. Visitors to the behavioral health unit may not bring personal belongings in.
As at most hospitals, flowers are generally welcome on medical, surgical, maternity and rehabilitation floors and not permitted in intensive-care units or rooms with immunocompromised patients. Latex balloons are usually banned; Mylar balloons are fine. If you are unsure which unit the patient is on, call the hospital and ask before ordering.

Visiting hours and arriving at Saint Michael's
The hospital's visiting-hours page lists general and intensive care visiting from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and behavioral health visiting from 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Older hospital documents give shorter hours, so call 973-877-5000 if the timing matters. Only two visitors may be in a room at once, and children must be 12 or older and with an adult.
All visitors stop at the information desk in the main lobby for a pass. The hospital's patient guide puts the visitor parking lot at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and James Street, with valet parking from a driveway on Central Avenue.
Gift shop at Saint Michael's
There is a gift shop off the renovated lobby next to the emergency room, alongside the chapel and café. The hospital does not publish its hours or say whether it sells flowers.
What to send to a hospital room
- Compact vase arrangement, low fragrance, in a stable non-glass container: fits a crowded bedside table.
- Bright gerbera daisies or sunflowers: cheerful, scent-free and sturdy.
- A small flowering plant: goes home with the patient and keeps giving.
- Mylar balloon bouquet: the fallback when the unit does not allow flowers.
