How to send flowers to a patient at University Hospital

  1. Confirm the patient is admitted and which unit they are on. Call the main number, 973-972-4300, and ask; the unit determines whether flowers are allowed.
  2. Order online with the hospital's street address. Use 150 Bergen Street, Newark, NJ 07103, not a P.O. box.
  3. Add the patient's full legal name and the unit or room. Put it in the recipient name and delivery-instructions fields so the information desk can route it.
  4. Order in the morning. Patients are often discharged before noon; an early same-day order has the best chance of arriving in time.
  5. Include your phone number. The florist calls you if the patient has moved or been discharged, so the delivery can be redirected.

About University Hospital

University Hospital is New Jersey's public academic health center: a 519-bed hospital on Bergen Street and the principal teaching hospital of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Its Eric Muñoz Trauma Center is the only Level I trauma center in northern New Jersey. The hospital is also a comprehensive stroke center and home to the state's first liver transplant program.

The hospital has a maternity program, a 24-bassinet neonatal intensive care unit, a 10-bed general pediatric unit with a small pediatric critical care unit, surgical, medical and cardiac intensive care units, and an inpatient psychiatric unit.

University Hospital flower policy

University Hospital's patient guide says flowers are delivered to patient rooms by individual florists and are not allowed in the intensive care units. The same guide asks visitors to check with staff before bringing anything that can trigger allergies, including balloons and flowers, into a patient's room.

As at most hospitals, flowers are generally welcome on medical, surgical, maternity and rehabilitation floors and not permitted in intensive-care units or rooms with immunocompromised patients. Latex balloons are usually banned; Mylar balloons are fine. If you are unsure which unit the patient is on, call the hospital and ask before ordering.

Visiting hours and arriving at University Hospital

General visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with two people at a time in the room. The intensive care units close to visitors for part of the afternoon and evening, and the hospital's own pages list slightly different ICU hours, so call before visiting an ICU patient. The psychiatric unit has one-hour visiting slots. On pediatrics, parents may visit at any time and one family member may stay overnight.

Valet parking is at the main entrance, and self-parking is in the 1,000-vehicle garage next to the Doctors Office Center. Visitors check in with a government photo ID at a kiosk or with reception staff. The main lobby is on C-level.

Gift shop at University Hospital

Go Market by Lori's, in the main lobby on C-level, is open around the clock with a cashier on weekdays; the gift shop number is 973-622-2329. The hospital does not say whether it sells flowers.

What to send to a hospital room

  • Compact vase arrangement, low fragrance, in a stable non-glass container: fits a crowded bedside table.
  • Bright gerbera daisies or sunflowers: cheerful, scent-free and sturdy.
  • A small flowering plant: goes home with the patient and keeps giving.
  • Mylar balloon bouquet: the fallback when the unit does not allow flowers.
